Earth sauna

Klafs ABC of well-being

The earth sauna is regarded as the mother of all saunas as we know them today. An earth sauna is made by digging a large, deep hole in the ground. A stone trough is placed inside this hole, and a pinewood cabin with a thatched roof built over the top. This makes you feel as though you’re sitting in a hut in the middle of a forest. Many earth saunas are large enough to fit up to 15 persons. As with other sauna types, the centrepiece of an earth sauna is the heater. Here, wood-fired heaters are used to create a particularly cosy atmosphere. The climate inside an earth sauna is very mild and dry.
