SMOKE SAUNA

KLAFS ABC OF WELL-BEING

The smoke sauna is the next step on from an earth sauna. It’s a closed, square or rectangular log cabin, built on ground level. At the heart of the sauna is the chimneyless wood burner. This is heated before the sauna is used, covering the sauna benches and walls with a layer of black soot. So in a smoke sauna, the emphasis is more on sweating than on taking a sauna “bath”. After leaving the smoke sauna, you take a long shower to wash off the soot and sweat. Smoke saunas are the forerunners of saunas with heaters, as we know and love them today.
