The other things you need for a sauna.

Three things are important during the heating phase in a sauna: The air temperature, the relative humidity, the duration of the sauna session. So, you need a thermometre, a way of clocking time and a hydrometre, as the device for measuring humidity is called. A hour glass is the best option for measuring time because it is heat-proof. Thermometres are tried and tested and therefore not problem. The humidity is the really complicated part. Not the actual water content is measured, instead, the relative saturation of the air with water. Depending on the temperature, the air can absorb different quantities of water. Close to freezing point, one cubic metre of air can contain 5 grams of water. Going beyond this value water droplets are formed. At 50 °C, the same amount of air can contain already 82 grams of water before steam forms, and at 100 °C it is 590 Grams per cubic metre of air. The maximum of water which the air can absorb before saturation is 100 % air humidity. The hygrometer measures the prevailing humidity in relationship to saturation. If the hygrometer shows 50 % saturation, then there are at 0 ° 2.5 grams water available, at 80 °C 41 grams and at 100 °C 245 grams. That is why it is important to measure temperature and humidity at the same height in the sauna. The second bench may have a humidity of 5 – 15 %, the third bench of 3 – 10 %, so as to form a good sauna climate. The measurement of the relative humidity is more difficult to calibrate than for the temperature measurement. At high humidity levels in the sauna, despite a long warm-up phase, the measurements can become inaccurate or the hygrometer is too low. In winter, especially, when the room air is drier, heating will dry it out even more. Very dry air is hard on the muscosa, it may burn in the nose and eyes. That is why an infusion should be used before the first sauna session to increase the humidity in the cabin. To increase the heat stimulation, a further infusion can be used during the sauna session.
