Like two years ago KLAFS will demonstrate within the scope of Salone del Mobile in Milan, the world’s leading trade fair for design and living, once again how design excellence and craftsmanship will lead together to a fascinating result, which re-defines a common idea.
In 2014 it has been the world premiere of the Matteo Thun Edition, realized together with Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez. With this special edition the market leader for sauna, pool and spa has transformed the products sauna and steam bath for the first time into a architectural highlight which excites the experts. So the Matteo Thun Edition sauna, which has a distinctive exterior that stands out with its unique interplay of wooden rails and joints, has chosen to be the winner of the Interior Innovation Award 2015 and has been awarded at the design contest „Plus X Award“ 2015 in the categories high quality, design and ease of use.
In 2016 André Fu, one of the most popular protagonists of modern asian architecture and founder of Studio AFSO in Hong Kong (www.afso.net), has worked together with KLAFS at a completely different project: the idea of a mobile shower. The fascinating result is THE WATER CABIN – a cubus that seems to be closed at first sight all over and which stands out through its uniqe design and technical details.
„We have re-defined the experience of a mobile water cabin – a portable retreat for one to rinse, change and escape“, André Fu explains the philosophy of his concept, „THE WATER CABIN ties in with the spirit of a modern traveller – the desire to engage themselves with free-spirited, well-detailed, yet honest experiences”.
THE WATER CABIN is constructed entirely in wood and features a series of interlocking frames – much in-keeping with André Fu’s language of modern Asian sensibility. On three sides of the installation there are in each case two lamellae doors that are fixed centred on top and bottom. Therefore the cabin can be entered from various positions.
Each of these doors can also be fixed in the open position, so that on is able to view into the surrounding nature while showering. André Fu and KLAFS have implemented the idea of rotating about a central axis also on yet another matter. The fixed wall, which is the place where the fixtures are mounted, is equipped with a movable rack with several shelves, that is completely closed on the back side. So the shower utensils easily disappear from the field of vision with a simple turning motion.
THE WATER CABIN will be in the field of vision with full intention from April, 12th to April, 16th at the FuoriSalone in Milan. The reason is that the joint project of André Fu and KLAFS is part of „Wallpaper* Handmade Exhibition“. The aim of this annual event, that is organized by the world’s most important design and style magazine Wallpaper* (www.wallpaper.com), is to gather the world's finest creative minds and manufacturing talents to create a veritable feast of design excellence.
