Custom-made walnut sauna in a noble ambience

In a listed canal house in Amsterdam, a true wellness bathroom gem adorns a spacious penthouse. The building, located on the city's widest canal, served as an office building for a long time. In 1997, it was divided into commercial space and residential apartments. The residents at the time combined the two upper apartments, creating a spacious penthouse with an outdoor terrace.

Eight years ago, the current residents renovated the penthouse in collaboration with a renowned Amsterdam interior design studio, giving it a stylish interior. The en-suite bathroom was recently redesigned.

The desire for a wellness bathroom with a sauna was a strong one. "But we were faced with the question of where to put it," the resident reports. Together with the specialists from KLAFS, a custom-made sauna was designed that seamlessly integrates into the new wellness area. The sauna was cleverly installed around the existing columns, with one side wall concealed in the adjacent wall of the master bedroom behind vertically aligned walnut panels that seamlessly transition into a walnut wardrobe wall.

The residents had a clear vision for their sauna: a space that seamlessly blended with the home's existing design. Walnut wood panels were chosen to clad the sauna’s interior walls, creating visual harmony with other wooden and panelled elements throughout the house. The elegant vertical arrangement of the walnut panels adds structure and a refined aesthetic to the space.Lighting across the wellness area was expertly curated, with the sauna lighting forming an integral part of the overall concept. Indirect SUNSET L backrest lighting and the decorative ROMEO and JULIA pendant lights from KLAFS contribute to a warm, relaxing ambiance. At the vanity, a generously sized round mirror is illuminated to provide both functional lighting and a striking design feature, contrasting beautifully with the vertical lighting integrated into the opposite wall. Additional pendant lamps add atmospheric and decorative touches throughout.

For optimal relaxation, the custom-built sauna includes a KLAFS InfraPLUS infrared seat with an adjustable backrest—perfect for those seeking the deep, soothing benefits of infrared heat.
