Japandi style: Scandinavian elegance meets Japanese minimalism

In the heart of Zurich's wine country, a young family has realised their dream home. Their detached family home, built in 1996, is currently undergoing a loving renovation and the focus of the first phase: converting the garage into a spacious guest room with a sauna. It features a GESA nature sauna from KLAFS, and in collaboration with the renowned architectural firm Chreisel AG Architecture and Real Estate, we’ve created a first-class relaxation oasis.

The young family has lived in their idyllic home in Henggart since 2015 and planned to create a wellness oasis that reflects the charm of their Scandinavian roots. Of Finnish descent and raised with sauna culture, the owner dreamed of having her own sauna, which would become an indispensable part of their new interior design concept.

To realise this dream, they followed the advice of their architectural firm, Chreisel AG Architecture and Real Estate, headed by Kurt Hofmann. Based on their long-standing and successful collaboration, the architects recommended the KLAFS sauna brand, which is known for its excellent design, innovative technology, and unmatched quality.

When installing the sauna, the family placed great importance not only on ensuring functionality but also maintaining the open feel of the space. Aesthetic considerations therefore played a central role. The GESA nature sauna, designed by Gesa Hansen, harmonises perfectly with the home's interior design concept. The elegant design, which combines Scandinavian cosiness with Japanese minimalism, harmonises with the Nordic style, which is characterised by colours such as light grey, blue-grey, black and white, and wood tones.

With its large, open insulated glass fronts and integrated outdoor shelving, the sauna blends seamlessly into the room's design: "The GESA sauna is the complete opposite of the original, traditional wooden sauna, which would have made the space appear smaller. It's modern, timelessly elegant, and has an incredibly homely feel. It offers us the perfect combination of functionality and design," says the owner. Despite the new furnishings, the room remains airy and flooded with light.

This combination of traditional craftsmanship, modern design, and superior functionality makes the GESA sauna a true highlight of the home. For the family of five, it's more than just a sauna - it's a "happy place," a place for deep relaxation, reflection, and precious memories.
